Wow! Can you believe anything you're hearing about anabolic steroids these days? It's generating quite a commotion, but not always for the right reasons. Let's take a moment to explore what makes these performance enhancers so popular, other from the fact that people are "cheating."

First, let's debate if this is truly cheating, or at the very least, try to put things in context. To do so, we must first understand what we are discussing. The term "anabolic" refers to the process of gaining muscle mass (rather than catabolic which means to tear apart or break down). Steroids are a sort of substance found in the body that acts as a hormone and regulates DNA synthesis by entering the nucleus and attaching itself to various elements of the DNA-making machinery. These anabolic steroids are essentially compounds that develop muscle, among other tissues.

In essence, they are simply adding to a natural process that occurs in all of our bodies. Those with naturally higher amounts of these hormones will have inherently larger muscles and, if they work them, greater potential. So, is it truly ability that contributes to being exceptionally strong, or is it a crap shoot? I, for one, prefer the latter, and as a result, I don't consider it cheating so much as potentiating a person's true aptitude in a sport. My reasoning is based on two major factors. To begin, you must still put in a lot of effort to build large muscles when on steroids. To be a good hitter, you must first be able to swing a bat and select the proper pitch. In both circumstances, you're only employing a "tool" to help you reach your full potential, similar to how sunglasses let you see a fly ball in the outfield better but don't catch it for you.

You may be surprised to learn that I do not believe anabolic steroids should be made legal. But you must hear my reason–not because I believe it is cheating, but because I believe it is harmful to the player's health. As you can see, these chemicals have an impact on more than just your muscles. They have an effect on your heart, placing you at danger of sudden death. They also cause your muscles to grow too large for your body to maintain, increasing the risk of tendon, ligament, and bone injury. There are numerous other things that are negatively impacted as well, making these items completely unworthy of your time.
